OSIBISA, THE JUNGLE BEAT

"WOYAYA", EL SEGUNDO DISCO DE OSIBISA, DEBERÍA CONSIGNARSE EN LA HISTORIA DE LA MÚSICA COMO EL PRIMER ÁLBUM DE ROCK PROGRESIVO / JAZZ FUSIÓN AFRICANO. CASI CUARENTA AÑOS DESPUÉS DE SU EDICIÓN, SIGUE SIENDO UNA JOYA, DE ESCUCHA OBLIGADA, PERFECTA EN TODOS LOS SENTIDOS. UNA OBRA DE ARTE.

The story of OSIBISA starts in London in 1969, when three musicians from Ghana ( Teddy Osei on the Sax, Sol Amarfio on the drums and Mac Tontoh on the trumpet); join Spartacus R from Grenada who played the bass and complemented perfectly the African percussion, Roger Bayle from Trinidad and Tobago on the keyboards and Wendel Richardson from Antigua on the lead guitar. Very soon they found another member, Asisi Amao from Nigeria who added extra percussion plus tenor Sax. and in that moment OSIBISA was born. During the next two years they were preparing their first album but in 1970 they released their first and very successful single: "Music for Gong Gong" that caught attention from all the world. In 1971 they release the fantastic "Osibisa" with an extremely beautiful art cover by a young painter named Roger Dean. From the beginning this album broke schemes, the opener "The Dawn" starts as a tribal ceremony to receive the day with complex percussion surrounded by birds and sounds you could easily listen in central Africa, but soon the vocals and instruments prove us that they were incredibly talented to blend different influences that go from, Hendrix, Santana, Bob Marley, R&B, Jazz and all the British Psychedelia they listened and assimilated during the years they were in England, this capacity to blend styles supposedly incompatible is what took them close to Progressive Rock. The second OSIBISA album "Woyaya" was released in the same year and marked a change in their music, even when they kept the tribal sound and complex percussion they started to experiment with the organ, this album reaches their peak in the title song that closes the album an incredibly beautiful nostalgic chant "We are going, Heaven knows where we are going" surrounded by an atmospheric and psychedelic organ, extremely beautiful song. In 1972 they release their most successful album "Heads", mostly because of the legendary song "Che Che Kule", this album marked the end of their Psychedelic/Proto Prog career, but still is a great album that deserves to be listened. Their career continues with high and low points until the 21st Century but turning more and more commercial with the pass of the years, but still today they are icons in Ghana, where they've been awarded by former President Jerry J Rowling. • TEXT By PROG Archives

WEATHER REPORT

RECORDED IN 1977, "HEAVY WEATHER" WAS THE ALBUM THAT PUT THE NAME OF WEATHER REPORT ON THE MAP, AN ABSOLUTE FUSION CLASSIC.

Ninguna banda, a excepción de Chic Corea y sus Return to Forever, contribuyó tanto a la entronización y éxito del jazz fusión, o simplemente del jazz-rock, durante la década de los setenta, como Weather Report. El camino había sido abierto –no podía ser de otro modo–, por Miles Davies, con dos obras básicas y esenciales en la historia de la música: "In a Silent Way" (febrero de 1969) y el doble álbum "Bitches Brew" (grabado seis meses más tarde); discos que inauguraron la progresiva electrificación de la música del gran maestro. En el primero de ellos, junto a invitados de la talla de John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock o Dave Holland, participaban Joe Zawinul (órgano) y Wayne Shorter (saxo), piedras angulares en la construcción del sonido Weather Report. El grupo ha estampado su firma a casi veinte fantásticos trabajos desde 1971 hasta la actualidad; baste recordar títulos como "Misterious Traveller" (1974), "Black Market (1976) o "Mr. Gone" (1978), considerados verdaderas joyas por los amantes del género. De todos modos, fue "Heavy Weather" (1977) la grabación que catapultó a Weather Report al estrellato consagrándoles como una formidable banda capaz de atraer a miles de personas a sus conciertos. Junto a Zawinul y a Shorter, completaban la formación tres auténticos monstruos: Jaco Pastorius, bajo; Alex Acuña, batería y Manolo Badrena, percusión. Cinco virtuosos capaces de patentar un sonido propio, lleno de ritmo, tono, color, atmósfera y paisaje, en un óleo musical tan impredecible y sorprendente como una primavera en Inglaterra y tan cargado de electricidad como una tormenta de verano. Desde el clásico "Birdland" hasta "Havona", cerrando el disco, todo en "Heavy Weather" es impecable. Una lección y un derroche. Puro delirio capaz de embotar los sentidos. En definitiva, una obra maestra imprescindible. Cómprala.

STEELY DAN, LA PERFECCIÓN EXISTE

AJA REMAINS NOT ONLY AS A HIGHLIGHT IN STEELY DAN´S CAREER, IS ALSO ONE OF THE MOST DISTINCTIVE ALBUMS IN CONTEMPORARY JAZZ FUSSION

La búsqueda de la perfección, del arquetipo áureo, al que nada puede añadirse o restarse, pues es completo por si mismo, ha sido una constante desde que Platón señalara al reino de las ideas. No abundan ejemplos en las áreas de comportamiento humano, pero sí en el arte, en cualquiera de sus disciplinas, donde es factible hallar lienzos que no requieren más pinceladas; esculturas con los golpes exactos de cincel, o partituras que no podrían ser mejoradas así cien maestros se lo propusieran. "Aja", el sexto álbum de Steely Dan, pertenece a esa categoría, que se eleva sobre los parámetros de lo extraordinario y alcanza el ámbito de lo inmutable. Walter Becker y Donald Fagen, responsables de este diamante, rozan la demencia: en su búsqueda del más difícil todavía –y así se narra en el film que recoge el making of de este disco–, pasaron semanas buscando al batería que pudiera efectuar un redoble tan complejo, y a la vez tan sencillo, que nadie acertaba a dar con él. Y todo ese trabajo sólo para tres segundos de pista. La anécdota ilustra el celo obsesivo que los dos pusieron en "Aja", un disco de jazz/rock/fusión, tremendamente sofisticado, urbano, cosmopolita, cool; clasificado entre los 500 mejores de la historia de la música, ganador de un Grammy Award, merecedor de discos de platino por sus cinco millones de copias vendidas. Siete temas excepcionales, construidos como una catedral flamígera, estructuras fascinantes, y un elenco de músicos de puro lujo: Tom Scott, Jim Horn, Wayne Shorter, Larry Carlton, Steve Gadd, Michael McDonald, Lee Ritenour, y muchos otros.
