One of the better British progressive groups, The STRAWBS were a 60's folk and medieval band turned prog-rock with the help of Dave COUSINS (the heart and soul of this group) and Rick WAKEMAN "master of the keyboards". WAKEMAN is featured on the albums "Strawbs", "Dragonfly", "Just A Collection of...", and "From The Witchwood" before he joined YES. The line-up for the group changed markedly over the years. Their sound has been in a state of constant evolution combining English folk and progressive sounds to form their unique style. Critics seem to have a preference for the STRAWBS in the early Seventies when the group consisted of Tony & John HOOPER, John FORD, Richard HUDSON and keyboard virtuoso Rick WAKEMAN. The group ceased to exist at the end of the 1970s, and COUSINS embarked on some solo projects. STRAWBS would appeal to fans of bands like FAIRPORT CONVENTION, STEELEYE SPAN, PENTANGLE, etc. They have recorded over 15 albums through the years, with various lineups around the core of Dave COUSINS who offered beautiful melodic compositions. Every STRAWBS album between "Witchwood" and "Nomadness" has something unique to offer. A perfect introduction to the sound of The STRAWBS is the compilation-CD "A Choice of Strawbs" (16 tracks). It features all their best material from their most creative and "symphonic" period (between '71 and '74). The music of The STRAWBS frequently ranges from folky (acoustic guitars) and classic (piano and harpsichord) to bombastic, symphonic rock (fiery electric guitar and glorious Mellotron in the vein of BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST and The MOODY BLUES). The vocals are powerful with a lot of expression.

SANDY DENNY, THE ROSE OF ENGLAND

WITHOUT DOUBT, SANDY DENNY WAS THE GREAT LADY OF THE BRITISH FOLKROCK SCENE

El 21 de abril de 1978 la escena musical inglesa se vistió de luto. Un estúpido accidente –una caída por unas escaleras– acababa con la vida de Sandy Denny, la gran voz del folkrock británico. No era una voz más. Ella era La Voz. Vaya por delante una declaración: siempre he admirado a cantantes como Jacqui McShee, de Pentangle, o a Maddy Prior, de Steeleye Span, o a July Dyble, primera vocalista de Fairport Convention, a la que Sandy sustituiría; mujeres de extraordinaria técnica y pureza vocal. Pero Sandy..., ¡ay, qué difícil!, Sandy era algo más. Cuando esa mujer se ponía a cantar, la vida se paraba a escuchar. Todo se detenía. Era imposible no emocionarse con ella, pues era pura emoción, fuerza y delicadeza, convicción y duda. Dotada de una voz dulce, llena de matices, capaz de acariciar, provocar lágrimas, o suscitar euforia, Sandy enamoraba hasta a los impertérritos. En lo personal, parece ser que fue una mujer tímida, insegura, zarandeada por los complejos. Dicen que se lamentaba de no ser más guapa, más alta, o más no importa qué. Ella misma se sorprendía de que todos la consideraran un portento, un milagro irrepetible; que hablaran de ella en los términos usados a la hora de referirse a estrellas de la talla de Janis Joplin o Joni Mitchell, o que Robert Plant y Jimmy Page le concedieran el honor de ser la única vocalista invitada a cantar con Led Zeppelin en toda su historia ("The Battle of Evermore", Led Zeppelin IV). Cuando Sandy murió, a los 31 años de edad, tras una carrera fructífera –que dejó cuatro preciosos álbumes en solitario, amén de una larga lista de títulos al frente de front line bands como Fairport Convention, Fotheringay o The Strawbs–, todos nos quedamos muy solos. Hoy, treinta años después, Sandy es una leyenda; sus canciones son recuperadas y vueltas a grabar y no pasa día sin que en algún lugar del mundo alguien la descubra y lamente el tiempo perdido. Fue una gran dama, la rosa más perfecta del jardín del folk británico. Siempre va conmigo.
