Terry Talbot
and the band, Mason Proffit, have a rich history in American music. In August of 1969 Mason Proffit released Terry's first of thirty albums and changed the face of music forever. Terry was the front man and principle song writer for the band and penned their hit songs, Two Hangmen (politically charged and banned by the FCC), Eugene Pratt and Better Find Jesus. They recorded five albums on the Warner Bros. label and their opening acts included John Denver, The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, and Dan Fogelberg. Terry's production skills and on-stage energy fused the band with the reputation as pioneers and innovators in the emerging country rock movement of the late 60's. And as stated by Bernie Leadon and Glen Frey, The Eagles were greatly influenced by Mason Proffit and followed the design of Two Hangmen for their Hotel California.

ARGENT, CIRCUS

UNA JOYA DE LA DISCOGRAFÍA DE ARGENT QUE NO DEBE FALTAR EN NINGUNA COLECCIÓN. ROCK PROGRESIVO DE IMPECABLE FACTURA, MELÓDICO E INAGOTABLE.

This is Argents first effort without Russ Ballard and it doesn't miss. Russ did make some important contributions over the years and for many he was or should have been the primary focus of this band as he's talented and did write some of Argent's most notable songs; "Liar" and "God Gave Rock and Roll to You" but this band existed and moved forward because of Rod Argent. This release and the last effort; "Counterpoints" are the two least known efforts by the group that were hardly recognized and quickly faded. Rod finally had the opportunity to complete the transformation of the bands sound that began with the "Nexus" release. He handles all the lead vocals and writes six of the seven songs. "Highwire" is the real standout. Clocking in at just over nine minutes it is a collage of keyboard and guitars, time changes, rock and roll, classical and jazz all captured and molded into an epic arrangment. The guitar work by the two new Argent members is not to be overlooked. Rodford and Henrit continue to drive the band onward as they always have.

A Momentary Lapse of Reason is the thirteenth studio album by English progressive rock group Pink Floyd. It was released in the UK and US in September 1987. In 1985 guitarist David Gilmour began to assemble a group of musicians to work on his third solo album. At the end of 1986 he changed his mind, and decided that the new material would instead be included in a new Pink Floyd album. Subsequently Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason and keyboardist Richard Wright (who had left the group in 1979) were brought on board for the project. Although for legal reasons Wright could not be re-admitted to the band, he and Mason helped Gilmour craft what would become the first Pink Floyd album since the departure of lyricist and bass guitarist Roger Waters in December 1985. The album was recorded primarily on Gilmour's converted houseboat, Astoria.
Its production was marked by an ongoing legal dispute between Waters and the band as to who owned the rights to Pink Floyd's name, which was not resolved until several months after the album was released. Unlike most of Pink Floyd's studio albums, A Momentary Lapse of Reason has no central theme, and is instead a collection of rock songs written mostly by Gilmour and musician Anthony Moore. Although the album received mixed reviews and was derided by Waters, with the help of an enormously successful world tour it easily out-sold their previous album The Final Cut. A Momentary Lapse of Reason is certified multi-platinum in the US.

JAN AKKERMAN, TABERNAKEL

TABERNAKEL (1974) ES UN ÁLBUM BELLÍSIMO, MAGISTRAL, Y NO DEMASIADO CONOCIDO, EN EL QUE JAN AKKERMAN FUSIONA LA DELICADEZA DE LA MÚSICA CLÁSICA CON EL ROCK PROGRESIVO, UN PASO MÁS ALLÁ DEL LEGADO DE FOCUS. PURA ARMONÍA. PERSONALMENTE LO CONSIDERO SU MEJOR TRABAJO EN SOLITARIO.

For Focus devotees this is perhaps Akkermans' finest solo effort as he makes use of many the same characteristics one would find on Focus recordings. There is a nice mix of classical, folk and rock pieces here including some work with small orchestral arrangements that all work splendidly. Akkerman's guitar work is tasteful and passionate throughout. This is a wonderful recording well worth owning (Amazon Review)

After leaving Yes, and while looking for some other musical project, Banks supported Blodwyn Pig for a brief period in late 1970, and guested as session musician on an album by Chris Harwood. In 1971 Banks formed Flash and sessions began for a first album, with Tony Kaye guesting on keyboards.The record appeared in 1972 (called simply Flash) and had a warm reception. Subsequent to Kaye's involvement, Banks took the dual role of guitarist and keyboardist. Flash recorded and released its second album (In the Can) in November that same year; and the third (Out of Our Hands) in 1973. Parallel to that, Banks and guitarist Jan Akkerman became friends and started to play and record together. Banks also played on an album by Roger Ruskin Spear at that time. In 1973, not long after the third and final Flash release, Banks released Two Sides of Peter Banks. Guest musicians included Akkerman, bassist John Wetton, drummer Phil Collins, guitarist Steve Hackett and fellow Flash members Ray Bennett and Mike Hough.

PETER GABRIEL, THE TOUCH

Musician, writer and video maker, Peter GABRIEL is one of the most prolific artist in the world and also one of the most loved musicians in prog-scene. He was the singer and front-man of GENESIS since 1967 to 1975, but that´s another story. GABRIEL started his solo career in 1977, and since then he has released 8 studio albums, 2 live albums, 3 original sound tracks and 3 compilations, always with the collaboration of a lot of different and great musicians and playing different musical styles. 1977 was the date of the release of Peter´s first album "Peter Gabriel 1", one year after "Peter Gabriel 2" was published, both albums have a similar sound (pop-prog-rock), and count with the production and guitars of KING CRIMSON's Robert Fripp and Tony Levin on bass, being Tony an active member of Peter's band since then. "Solsbury Hill" was the hit single of GABRIEL´s first work, both albums include classic songs that are still being played on his actual shows. In 1980 two things happened, one was the release of Peter's third album "Peter Gabriel 3", this one being the most complete work till date in the opinion of a lot of fans, and also was the foundation of WOMAD (World Of Music, Arts and Dance) where Peter and other members of WOMAD played a series of festivals around the world, where they mixed traditional and modern music. In 1982 Peter published "Security" album, with a different sound, more electronic and also it was the first time that Peter began to use African sounds in his albums. This was followed by the double live album "Peter Gabriel Plays Live". Two years after Peter released his first OST "Birdy" (Alan Parker film), which was a great mix of eerie sounds and relaxing music. Just one year after, in 1986 "So" was published, which was a well known and best selling album, with a clear pop sound and hit singles like "Sledgehammer" and "Don´t Give Up" (with the collaboration of Kate Bush on vocals) and the great "Red Rain". This album won several awards, especially for his video clips, very sophisticated for that year. Three years after, Peter published his second OST, Martin Scorcese's "Last Temptation Of Christ", one of the most experimental and innovative albums, with a mix of different musical styles. After this album a compilation "Shaking The Tree Sixteen Golden Greats" was published, and in 1988 Peter was involved in some benefit concerts, like "Human Rights Now" tour for Amnesty International, with artists like STING, Tracey CHAPMAN, Bruce SPRINGSTEEN and YOUSSOU N´DOUR. In 1992 a new album "US" was published, a very eclectic and personal album, with a wide range of different sounds and also some hit singles. TIM HART & MADDY PRIOR

Born in Blackpool and raised in St Albans Maddy Prior first came to prominence as a duo with singer/ guitarist Tim Hart, building a reputation around the folk clubs and releasing two albums. As the 70s dawned, they joined forces with Ashley Hutchings (of Fairport Convention) and Gay & Terry Woods, with the idea of fusing folk song with rock instrumentation and technique. The new group took its name from a traditional Lincolnshire ballad 'Horkstow Grange' - the tale of a character called Steeleye Span. So began an incredible story. Others may claim the invention of folk-rock, but Steeleye were the first to drag it into the electronic age. In the age of the giant rock band, Steeleye Span fitted the bill perfectly, taking folk music out of the backroom clubs and into the charts with a string of hit albums, gold discs and world tours. YES formed in 1968 with Jon ANDERSON (vocals), Chris SQUIRE (bass, vocals), Peter BANKS (guitar, vocals), Tony KAYE (keyboards), and Bill BRUFORD (drums). Well-known and influential mainstream progressive from the 1970's, and still around in some form ever since, they were highly influential in their heyday, especially notable for the really creative "Relayer". During the 1970s, YES pioneered the use of synthesizers and sound effects in modern music. Driven by Jon's artistic vision, they produced such timeless, symphonic-rock masterworks as "Roundabout," "Close To the Edge," and "Awaken". In the 1980s, YES pushed new digital sampling technologies to their limits, selling millions of records and influencing a generation of digital musicians with classics like "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" and "Rhythm Of Love". Moving through the 1990s and into the new millennium, the band keeps expanding its boundaries by using the latest hard-disk recording techniques and, most recently, working with a full orchestra to create their genre-defying music. YES gained large popularity with their brand of mysticism and grand-scale compositions. "Fragile" and "Close to the Edge" are considered their best works as it's symphonic, complex, cerebral, spiritual and moving. These albums featured beautiful harmonies and strong, occasionally heavy playing. Also, "Fragile" contained the popular hit song "Roundabout". This was followed by the controversial "Tales from Topographic Oceans" LP, which was a double album consisting of only four 20-minute length suites centering on religious concepts. Also, "Relayer" was their most experimental, yet grandiose and symphonic. They broke up, until the new jewel "Going For The One" and its incredible "Awaken" was issued in 1977. In later years, YES would go through many transformations. THE STRAWBS, FROM THE WITCHWOOD

STRAWBS ES SIN DUDA ALGUNA UNA DE LAS BANDAS MÁS QUERIDAS Y APRECIADAS DEL FOLK PROGRESIVO BRITÁNICO. CON UNA LARGUÍSIMA DISCOGRAFÍA A SUS ESPALDAS, MUCHOS DE SUS ÁLBUMES SON IMPRESCINDIBLES EN CUALQUIER BUENA COLECCIÓN. "FROM THE WITCHWOOD" Y "HERO & HEROINE" SON DOS OBRAS MAESTRAS.
One of the better British progressive groups, The STRAWBS were a 60's folk and medieval band turned prog-rock with the help of Dave COUSINS (the heart and soul of this group) and Rick WAKEMAN "master of the keyboards". WAKEMAN is featured on the albums "Strawbs", "Dragonfly", "Just A Collection of...", and "From The Witchwood" before he joined YES. The line-up for the group changed markedly over the years. Their sound has been in a state of constant evolution combining English folk and progressive sounds to form their unique style. Critics seem to have a preference for the STRAWBS in the early Seventies when the group consisted of Tony & John HOOPER, John FORD, Richard HUDSON and keyboard virtuoso Rick WAKEMAN. The group ceased to exist at the end of the 1970s, and COUSINS embarked on some solo projects. STRAWBS would appeal to fans of bands like FAIRPORT CONVENTION, STEELEYE SPAN, PENTANGLE, etc. They have recorded over 15 albums through the years, with various lineups around the core of Dave COUSINS who offered beautiful melodic compositions. Every STRAWBS album between "Witchwood" and "Nomadness" has something unique to offer. A perfect introduction to the sound of The STRAWBS is the compilation-CD "A Choice of Strawbs" (16 tracks). It features all their best material from their most creative and "symphonic" period (between '71 and '74). The music of The STRAWBS frequently ranges from folky (acoustic guitars) and classic (piano and harpsichord) to bombastic, symphonic rock (fiery electric guitar and glorious Mellotron in the vein of BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST and The MOODY BLUES). The vocals are powerful with a lot of expression.

SOFT MACHINE, MACHINE OF NUMBERS

"Third" sounds like chaos, but is not. It's carefully arranged. And besides the instruments, the Robert Wyatt lyrics are just too delicious.


Soft Machine fue un grupo inglés de rock progresivo, rock psicodélico y jazz fusión formado en Canterbury en 1966. Su nombre proviene de la novela de William Burroughs The Soft Machine. Son una de las principales bandas de la Escena de Canterbury, caracterizada por fusionar la psicodelia con el jazz y el rock progresivo. Soft Machine fue fundada en 1966 por el vocalista y batería Robert Wyatt, el guitarrista, bajista y vocalista Kevin Ayers, el guitarrista Daevid Allen y el teclista Mike Ratledge.

DEREK & THE DOMINOS, NO WORDS

Whenever I need my fix of classic 1970s' rock, I always turn to this album. After touring as a sideman with Delaney and Bonnie, Eric Clapton formed Derek and the Dominos out of Delaney and Bonnie's rhythm section (Bobby Whitlock, keyboards and vocals; Carl Radle, bass; and Jim Gordon, drums) and The Allman Brothers' guitarist, Duane Allman, and then released the penultimate rock love song, "Layla," which takes centerstage on this iconic rock album. Inspired by his then-unrequited love for model Pattie Boyd, the wife of his friend George Harrison, Clapton took the name "Layla" from Nezami Ganjavi's poem, "Layla and Majnun," which tells the story of a young man who goes crazy after falling in love with a beautiful, unavailable woman. Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is undeniably one of the ten greatest rock and roll albums of all time, and with the dual guitars of Allman and Clapton, it features Clapton at his best. The album is a collection of blues standards ("Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out," "It's Too Late," "Have You Ever Loved A Woman," and "Key To The Highway"), jams ("Tell the Truth"), and as the title suggests, "Other Assorted Love Songs" ("Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad," "Bell Bottom Blues," "Layla"). Ironically the album was in production at the time of Jimi Hendrix's drug-overdose. (A reverent cover of "Little Wing" was included on the album in tribute to Hendrix.) In fact, the album is eerily surrounded by death and drug addiction. (Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident soonafter the album release; Gordon later murdered his mother in a psychotic rage; and Clapton was addicted to heroin.) ABSOLUTE ELSEWHERE, THE LOST ALBUM



A RARE INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM FROM THE SEVENTIES, A ONE SHOT PROJECT BY ABSOLUTE ELSEWHERE, INCLUDING BILL BRUFORD ON DRUMS. A MUST FOR ALL LOVERS OF EARLY ELECTRONIC KEYBOARDS (MOOG, MELLOTRON...) AND PROG ROCK COLLECTORS. MAGNIFICENT.

"In Search of Ancient Gods" ("Buscando a los antiguos dioses") es uno de esos discos absolutamente peculiares dentro del género progresivo, una auténtica rareza. Fue grabado por Absolute Elsewhere, o lo que es lo mismo: Paul Fishman (teclados), Bill Bruford (batería); Philip Saatchi (guitarras) y Jon Astrop (bajo), y editado por Warner en 1976. No hubo ninguna obra posterior, ni continuidad de colaboración entre el cuarteto de músicos. Fue lo que se denomina un "One Shot", un "ahí queda eso y punto". El disco pasó prácticamente inadvertido pese a que los aficionados al rock progresivo eran, en esos momentos, legión. El LP, totalmente instrumental, es, como reza el título, una experiencia en música y sonido que celebra o ilustra las teorías de Erich Von Däniken acerca del origen extraterrestre de la civilización y de las visitas de "dioses espaciales" en un pasado remoto. Durante décadas ha sido absolutamente imposible encontrar copias de este trabajo, que ha visto cómo el tiempo lo convertía en álbum de culto. En los últimos años se han efectuado muy pocas ediciones en CD (hasta la fecha circulaba algún archivo mp3 en Internet procedente de un vinilo digitalizado) y únicamente en Japón. Localizar "In Search of Ancient Gods" en archivo Flac, procedente de una de esas ediciones japonesas, es el motivo que me anima a no demorar su publicación en ThatWasMusic. Disco de colección para amantes de la música de sintetizadores, mellotrones y electrónica en general; realmente magnífico, onírico, fantasioso, relajante. No te lo pierdas por nada del mundo. Es como si la música de King Crimson y Alan Parsons se hubieran dado la mano de forma mágica e irrepetible.

NEKTAR, GRUPO ALEMÁN DE ORIGEN INGLÉS, FIRMÓ ALGUNOS DE LOS MEJORES ÁLBUMES DE ROCK PROGRESIVO Y SPACE ROCK DE LOS SETENTA; DISCOS QUE PASARON DESAPERCIBIDOS PARA MUCHOS FANS DEL GÉNERO. CON UN ESTILO PROPIO QUE NO LE DEBE NADA A NADIE, ORIGINALES, EXCELENTES COMPOSITORES, Y FORMIDABLES INSTRUMENTISTAS, SON UN DEBER Y UN LUJO EN CUALQUIER COLECCIÓN.

NEKTAR is probably the most German-like of the Seventies British bands, a fame that owes a lot to the town in which this band was founded (Hamburg) and to their stylistic approach (Assimilated to Krautrock). NEKTAR was formed in 1969 by Allan FREEMAN (keyboards & vocals), Roye ALBRIGHTON (guitars & vocals), Derek MOORE (bass, Mellotron & vocals) and Ron HOWDEN (drums). Their earliest albums were hard rock that drew heavily from the space-rock and PINK FLOYD styles of the same period. The 70's gave them the occasion to issue some masterpieces, like for example "Remember the Future" (1973) and "Recycled" (1975). Each is a conceptual album that is a nice blend of melodic guitar and keyboards with a vocal story. "Journey To The Centre Of The Eye" is a mindblowing epic with lots of echoplex guitar and dual Mellotrons which is quite in tune with the Krautrock stuff going on around them, yet is definitely British. "Tab in the Ocean" and "Magic is a Child" had shorter songs and were less less satisfying. Fortunately there is a compilation album just called NEKTAR (1976) which has all the best bits of the albums and is highly recommended. • Text by Progarchives

IL VOLO, AN ITALIAN JEWEL


IL VOLO, UN SUPERGRUPO DE MÚSICOS DE ESTUDIO, GRABÓ ÚNICAMENTE DOS ÁLBUMES, DOS MARAVILLAS QUE NO PUEDEN FALTAR EN NINGUNA COLECCIÓN DE PROGRESIVO ITALIANO. MÁS MELÓDICOS QUE PFM, BANCO O LE ORME, PERO CON EL MISMO ESPÍRITU PRECIOSISTA Y VIRTUOSO. IMPRESCINDIBLES.

Usually described as a "supergroup", IL VOLO was a studio band formed by very popular musicians all coming from famous bands: Alberto Radius and Gabriele Lorenzi from FORMULA TRE, Mario Lavezzi from FLORA FAUNA CEMENTO and Camaleonti, Bob Callero from OSAGE TRIBE and DUELLO MADRE, Gianni Dall'Aglio from RIBELLI, along with composer Vince Tempera who also had his own band PLEASURE MACHINE. With such a pedigree it's obvious that both albums are very well played, and enjoyable but not memorable, lacking originality. An obvious similarity with FORMULA TRE is evident, along with a certain jazz-rock feel present throughout both albums, whose only distinctive element is the voice, missing on "Essere O Non Essere?" The group disbanded soon after the second release. Very good (somewhat jazz) fusion melodic symphonic with also very interesting percussion, keyboards, as nicely balanced music. The first Italian album from 1974, their music is built upon two keyboards with great vocals and lush arrangements. Close to PFM or BANCO by the vocals parts and the beauty of the themes and to E.L.P. by the instrumental virtuosity. Their second "Essere O Non Essere" is a classic item of mostly instrumental music with some theme more soft and some majesties keyboards flights a la KING CRIMSON.
